November 1st 2007 ~ Talent / Wolf
Dear Friends ~
I often get into discussions with people
about talent. I actually do not believe in it.
It is too much like having a magic wand that you wave over something
and it instantly
and effortlessly appears. What I do believe in is aptitude. Much
more important than
this however, is a strong desire, sticktoativeness and follow
through.

Talent
Quotations:
"Without underestimating the
value of talent, it's not the most important attribute you
need to become a successful artist. It's not even second. More
important than talent
is desire." ~ Harley Brown
"Persistence is the only way
to develop your natural aptitudes." ~ Sandy Sandy
"I don't believe in talent. Talent
is like a water table under the earth. You tap into it with
your effort and it comes through you, from the bottom of the
earth." ~ Natalie Goldberg
"We are told that talent creates
its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense
desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents."
~ Eric Hoffer

November 5th 2007 ~ Discovery / Wolves
Dear Friends ~
By working in sets, I am able to approach
painting with an attitude of discovery.
With this method, one painting usually leads me to the next.
This allows me to explore
various possibilities. As I work, I try to let the painting tell
me what it needs and where
it wants to go. If I trust my instincts and try not to intellectualize,
I'm usually satisfied
with the end results.

Discovery
Quotations:
"Painting is not a means of communication
or even self-expression, but rather a
process of discovering, or uncovering." ~ Louis de Brocquy
"You will learn to enjoy the
process... and to surrender your need to control the result.
You will discover the joy of practicing your creativity. The
process, not the product,
will become your focus." ~ Julia Cameron
"The process of image-making
is the evolution of an idea, the pursuit of which can be
like following clues in a treasure hunt. One discovery leads
to another." ~ Richard McDaniel

November 8th 2007 ~ Theme / Cardinals
Dear Friends ~
This is a biggerization of two small cardinal
paintings I just did. Although the
pieces all vary, the theme remains the same. In this set, as
in most of the ones
I create, I'm trying to tie in the theme of an inherent spirit
and energy that goes
beyond the physical.

Theme
Quotations:
"Exploit a subject or a theme
to its greatest potential by bringing all possible
reference to bear. Then put aside the reference and create again
using the potential
of your unfettered imagination." ~ Robert Genn
"Different themes inevitably
require different methods of expression. This does
not imply either evolution or progress; it is a matter of following
the idea one
wants to express and the way in which one wants to express it."
~ Pablo Picasso
"Having a theme or a motto as
an artist gives you a "look" when combined with
a technique. Having this "theme" is what all or most
artists come to eventually."
~ Beaman Cole

November 12th 2007 ~ Magic / Hummingbirds
Dear Friends ~
I was watching a movie on animal minds
where they studied the way different
species form maps and associations in their brains. One of the
most amazing is
the tiny hummingbird. Since little study has been conducted on
this mysterious
species, their characteristics and habits seem to transcend that
of the physical
world. I know their presence always brings much joy and magic
into my life!

Magic
Quotations:
"Painting isn't an aesthetic
operation; it's a form of magic designed as a mediator
between this strange, hostile world and us, a way of seizing
the power by giving
form to our terrors as well as our desires." ~ Pablo Picasso
"Effective magic is transcendent
nature." ~ George Eliot
"A work of art is one of mystery,
the one extreme magic; everything else is
either arithmetic or biology." ~ Truman Capote
"All creative art is magic and
is evocation of the unseen in forms persuasive,
enlightening, familiar and surprising". ~ Joseph Conrad

November 15th 2007 ~ Travel / Goldfinch
Dear Friends ~
Having dinner at the home of some friends
last night, I was captivated by various memories
of their travels and plans of future trips. Whether voyaging,
flying, caravaning, sailing, hiking,
skiing or biking, these folks seem to be game for it all. I'm
impressed by their enthusiasm for
life and unbridled sense of adventure. Thinking about traveling
makes me imagine seeing
what I've never seen and wonder about experiencing places I've
never been.

Travel
Quotations:
"Travel and change of place impart
new vigor to the mind." ~ Seneca
"There are no foreign lands.
It is the traveler only who is foreign." ~ Robert Louis
Stevenson
"One's destination is never a
place, but rather a new way of looking at things." ~ Henry
Miller
"Certainly, travel is more than
the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and
permanent, in the ideas of living." ~ Miriam Beard

November 19th 2007 ~ Gratitude / Wild Trurkey
Dear Friends ~
This time of year reminds us all that
we have so much to be grateful for.
Deep and sincere gratitude is something I don't think, feel or
voice as often
as I should. Giving thanks throughout the day is a wonderful
way to live.
Please join me in a more conscious attitude of gratitude!

Some quotations on Gratitude:
"Gratitude is not only the greatest
of virtues, but the parent of all the others. "
~ Cicero
"If the only prayer you said
in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice. "
~ Meister Eckhart
"I would maintain that thanks
are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is
happiness doubled by wonder." ~ G.K. Chesterton
"You say grace before meals. All right. But
I say grace before the concert and the
opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before
I open a book, and
grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing,
walking, playing, dancing
and grace before I dip the pen in the ink. " ~ G.K.

November 26th 2007 ~ Inspiration / Little Guy
Dear Friends ~
Often I get inspiration for my paintings
from fleeting moments in nature.
We have recently been blessed by the presence of a roving flock
of wild turkeys.
They are a sign of shared blessings. Certain individuals stand
out from the crowd
and offer me a heightened connection and a true feeling of inspiration.
I love to watch
them interact among themselves and with the other creatures that
share our world.
====<<>>====
Quotes on Inspiration:
"I equate inspiration with desire;
the desire that moves us to be artists in the first place.
To attempt to make a painting without this motivation is a waste
of time." ~ Nita Engle
"Inspiration comes from doing."
~ Robert Genn
"Sometimes I look at a painting
by another artist and I see a universal language that we're
both trying to express. I feel that we're on the same path, that
we share the same intentions,
and that's inspiring to me." ~ Birgit O'Connor
"Inspiration exists, but it has
to find you working." ~ Pablo Picasso

November 29th 2007 ~ Inspiration / Optimism
Dear Friends ~
Franklin Delano Roosevelt said that the
only limit to our realization of tomorrow
will be our doubts of today. I believe our thoughts are things
which attract like
situations to us. By thinking, talking and worrying about negative
outcomes, we
are actually empowering these thoughts to take physical form.
Many people are
bombarded by negative media and events daily which can have a
destructive effect.
With practice, we can override this stimulus with the powerful
habit of optimism.
====<<>>====
Some quotes on Optimism :
"So of cheerfulness, or a good
temper, the more it is spent, the more of it remains."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
"For myself I am an optimist.
It does not seem to be much use being anything else."
~ Winston Churchill
"The habit of looking on the
bright side of life will attract good things to you."
~ Sandy Sandy
"Keep your face to the sunshine
and you cannot see the shadow. ~ Helen Keller
"People who consider themselves
victims of their circumstances will always
remain victims unless they develop a greater vision for their
lives." ~ Stedman Graham
